Easter trip to Bendethra
« on: 19-Mar-13, 12:35 »
Just duplicating the post from our old website.

Anyone interested in an Easter trip this year? I was thinking either Deua or Brindabellas for a couple of days.

Let me know your thoughts and I'm happy to get the ball rolling.

Antendees:

4WDING (Graham, Sarah, Jack) - Big Hole - 3 Bunnies
Berg (Nick + other cruisers) - Bendethra
Demented (Chris + Helena) - Big Hole - 4 Bunnies
Riffa (James) - Big Hole - 3 Bunnies
Frank Jr (Jez + Gillian) - Big Hole - 3 Bunnies
Drugdependent - (Maurice + Alex) - Big Hole

Ok guys, here are the details for our Easter Trip.

I plan on going in to Bendethra from the West this time. We will meet up at "The Big Hole" around lunch time on Friday 29th March (Good Friday). We will leave "The Big Hole" car park at 1:00pm and head into Bendethra Valley. "The Big Hole" is off Cooma road, which you get to via Braidwood.

On Saturday, we will attempt to do the loop road around the top of the valley, if we rise from our restfull campsite in time :)

On Sunday we will make our way out of the valley to the East, and across The Deua River and back out onto The Araluen road. From here you can head north back via Braidwood, or south and out via Moruya.

Of course, the plan is flexible and you can modify it to suit your own ability and requirements.

The trip is suitable for all levels of modification, including stock standard vehicles.

Our camping area at Bendethra will have the bare minimal services, which include a long drop toilet – and thats it. There is a lovely river there if you need extra water, but otherwise you will need to be completely self sufficient.

You can find more details of the location on the following thread, as we were there in June 2012 (yes that long ago!)

There is information regarding "The Big Hole" on the national parks site here:

Count me in 4WDING for the Friday and Saturday.  :Awesome:

I will need to head home late Saturday afternoon so I should be right to do the loop road before heading back.

Cheers

I have been checking this thread for a while but haven't posted in case we couldn't make it. We are currently traveling the east coast from WA and looks like we will be around this area next weekend so count me in. Should get us way from the Easter crowds too - after 3 months hanging out at empty beaches any more then 3 people around and we start to freak out :)

We have a caravan in tow but will find somewhere to dump this for the weekend.

Looking forward to meeting you guys and to some wheeling.

Jez (and Gillian)

Your parents are lucky - Moruya is one of my favourite places.

Thanks Berg that would be awesome. I was eyeing off Moruya as somewhere to leave the van. We are currently at Mimosa Rocks NP (beautiful spot) so will slowly make our way to Moruya for next Friday.

I'll see if we have plans, but really keen to get away this Easter and do something.

The areas you're heading - are they going to be chockers as its Easter, or are they are decent distance away that you think not many people will be there?

Would be good to see you guys down there mate.

There will certainly be some people down there over Easter, but the Bendethra Valley is big enough that you can pretty much always find a nice quiet spot somewhere.

Yeah it'll have a few people around but for some unknown reason they all seem to camp at the entry to the valley. Has been like that over the past 30 years and I can't understand why. We typically go down by the horse camp which is about 2/3rds of the way into the valley. Few people camp there and its probably the pick of the spots.

For what its worth, Bendethera as a 4x4 camping destination frequently features in the top 10 locations nationally 4x4 trips, so that should give you some indication of how special it is.

Nah, it's more because our 10 month old won't deal with being restrained in a car seat all day.
Looking forward to getting out off road again.

the wife and i are thinking about joining - would a box trailer on big tyres be a hindrance?

Not supposed to bring them in or take them out on the trails we are using; National Parks have cracked down on it cause they're sick of fixing the spoon drains. You can come in via Moruya on Sugarloaf Road if you want to bring a trailer.

As berg said, no trailers when coming in from the West. The Sugarloaf road is easy enough to come in on though, and then you can dump the trailer at camp on Saturday for a run along the loop track.

I'll try and dig out a map for you to show the track in from Moruya.

Map of Bendethra can be downloaded from here.

Thanks go to Nick for the magic numbers from last years trip :)

We will be meeting up at Point #4 (Yellow), camping at Point #2 (Yellow). Point #2 (Blue) shows Moruya, and you can see "Little Sugarloaf Road" clearly marked.

I will be heading out to "The Big Hole" on thrusday night (about 9:00pm) so that I can take the family out to the actuall Big Hole in the morning. I'll have the radio tuned to channel 16.

Down the Hume to Goulburn, then head to Braidwood. It's essentially they way I go, except I get on the Hume at mittagong, coming from shellharbour.

if you are going to come via moruya, probably still similar, but head from Braidwood to Batemans bay then down to moruya. Check out google maps, these are all major roads, so should be easy to find.

Just a heads up guys; a few of us are heading down on Thursday night to bag a good camping spot and make the most of the long weekend :)
Reckon we'll be near the stock yards, but I'll SMS where we are to Graham once sorted. Figured Friday we'll go for a walk to the caves, so might not be at camp when you all arrive.

Hey boys. Unfortunately I am out. The bride has pulled the leave pass because it's a rare chance we get some good days together. I am off for 3 weeks from April 14 so if anyone wants a short trip after April 27 let me know and I should be able to organise something. Sorry again and hope to head out with everyone again soon.
