W.A. / Re: What do you consider the PERFECT camp set up?
« Last post by Pank on Yesterday at 22:59 »
We started with a tent on our Gibb River Road trip, but by the time we got home after 4 weeks on the road, we knew that we needed to tow our bed for any future trips.
I spent the next 15 months building our off road caravan which has a queen size bed, cooking, fridge, plenty of water (hot and cold) and power to last up to 2 weeks if required.
It is warm and dry with very little canvas to worry about when packing up.
Its the same width and a little taller than the FJ and can follow most places we want to go. Quick to drop off for a base camp which allows day trips.
We can pull up and be in bed within a couple of minutes or a full camp setup in about 15mins. ( a little longer to pack up)
We carry a second fridge, tools and dry food in the back of the FJ.
Its not cheap to tow, but in scheme of things it doesn't add that much to the total cost of a weekend or trip.
This setup suits the trips we do from weekend getaways to longer road trips.

Yes there is power going into the black box from the red on the right and there is power when I connect the small black wire (out of sight in this photo, under the two black wires), going to an ignition powered accessory, but ultimately there is no power coming out from the red wire on the left of the black bow going to the Thumper.

Have you checked the trigger going in to the relay (black box right side), where it comes from etc to make sure its not just a wiring issue and not a failed relay?
Otherwise I'd look to just replace that relay, look for markings as to the amperage etc.
A half decent AC charger will cost more than that relay.

The silver box on the right is the circuit breaker that is an automatic resetting circuit breaker and has power going in and power going out, the black box on the left has power going in but no power coming from the red wire on the far left but I did not get the AC charger.

The key to a perfect camping system for me is being able to access anything from my car in under 60 seconds, not just the beer, everything securely packed but easy to get to. It doesn't matter if I want a 15 amp fuse, a cup of water or the wheel brace it's in my hand in less a minute. The complete camp is able to be set up or packed away in around 10 to 15 minutes without towing anything that restricts where I can go. It can be left setup as a base-camp so when we return, no-one's taken our spot. It's scaleable for additional people to come or for extended trips, the storage is flexible enough to allow room. It's relatively light weight without stuff sticking up causing wind drag, raising the centre of gravity & catching on low High Country trees. The cooking gear is compact yet extensive enough for gourmet meals.
In short I run a swag or simple touring tent with Jetboil & Hillbilly cooking gear packed in a custom storage system with included water tank & lots of lightweight gear from hiking stores.
As per my sig line, looks are secondary, everything must serve a purpose or better still two. KISS   :cool3:

the front edge is the main panel plus a 20(19)mm plank so it makes the whole thing look a lot thicker than it is.

edit: my main panel is 12mm marine ply as per the design :)

Did yours come with that AC charger? If so you could just connect it to AC power and the battery terminals and let it charge.
11.7v isnt too low ( I was expecting <10v) but more than likely being an AGM type battery I'd want to fix the isolator (do you have any more info as to type or where its stopping voltage) or connect via an AC charger to charge it correctly.

There's a big gap between the bottom of the timber and the bolt hole itself RedFJC. Just got it finished up today, ended up using a 110mm bolt which was perfect!  Love the platform, works great with my CFX 50. Stoked with it, thanks again Kathy if you see this!
